I’ve written before of visits to Wicken Fen (here) and of the wild Konik ponies that roam the vast nature reserve. A couple of weekend ago we went back in search of the ponies and to try to get some photos. On our previous visit to the Fen, I didn’t have my digital SLR camera with me and had to make do with my phone camera but this time I went better prepared.
Our walk around the Fen was longer than we expected as the ponies were in a distant part of the reserve. When we eventually got close to them we were on a public footpath crossing the open ground with the ponies in a loose group blocking our way. We kept our distance and stood back watching them as the males, as last time, fought amongst themselves, biting, kicking and chasing.
We were there at the height of the day and taking photos towards the sun, making it much more difficult to get the light right but with some tinkering at home, I think I managed to capture some half decent images. Next time, however, we’ll try to be there either much earlier or later to get the softer light than we had.
